The purpose of Pontifex (in Latin, literally meaning "bridge-maker") Politics is to highlight agreement, cooperation, and consent among people of different political persuasions and ideologies. If we, as a people, a media, and a government, can start emphasizing the similarities that unite us--as opposed to the differences that divide us--we can begin to take steps towards better progress.
I use this word, "better," because progress is, to an extent, subjective. Sadly though, the hyper-partisan, polarized state of national politics has turned one man's progress into another's defeat. But it doesn't always have to be this way.
If we agree to work together, strive to find common ground, and compromise to settle our differences, one man's progress can and should be another man's progress. Most people agree that America needs a more cost-effective health care system, comprehensive immigration reform, a world-renowned education system, strong national security, and an energy strategy that satisfies both environmental and economic concerns. Each of these massive issues affects all Americans; therefore, public policy should be crafted to reflect all Americans. This way progress can be, as much as possible, universal.
Imagine for a second what our national policies would look like if everyone in Congress needed to reach consensus in order for a bill to become law. Dysfunctional and idealistic? Sure. Impossible? Probably. But imagine the cooperation and consensus-building that would be required to govern. Even more importantly, imagine how national policy would truly reflect the holistic interests of the American people.
As Abraham Lincoln said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." This blog strives to bring attention to the efforts that unite us. Additionally, this blog will single out individuals that perpetuate lies or pursue divisive agendas for personal gain.
